ANALYSIS OF THE YELLOW WALLPAPER

The yellow wallpaper is written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman who is an American writer. It is written when Gilman is diagnosed with “neurasthenia” and prescribed the “rest cure” treatment. Gilman considered that she is not sick and hated to take a rest as her doctor suggested. She felt better by working as usual. She intended to convince the doctor about her desire by writing The Yellow Wallpaper. That is why Yellow Wallpaper has a contradictory theme based on the writer’s experience.
The theme is “Between suffering and affection”. The story is about the narrator who suffers from serious depression and anxiety; besides she loved by her husband in inappropriate way. Narrator’s husband cared her by putting her in a suitable place for her recuperation, but she suffered being in that place along day with nothing to do for she thought that she was not sick. She would feel better without limitation in doing many things she wanted even just for walking around the place. So, there is a contradiction between what the narrator feels and her husband’s affection. Those all related to the characteristics of the characters in the story.
There are many characters appeared in that story either the directly involved characters or indirectly involved characters. The directly involved characters consist of an anonymous as the narrator (main role); John, the narrator’s husband and Jennie, the narrator’s sister in low. The indirectly involved characters consist of Merry, the narrator’s babysitter; Henry and Julia, narrator’s relatives and mother and Nellie. The characteristic is round characteristic noticed by the narrator who wants to be free (hyperactive), on spirit, critical, but sometimes is weak; Jennie as understanding and careful person who always took care of narrator; John as a physician who is always over protective to the narrator and high standing. A mixing method (discursive and dramatic) is used by Gilman in characterization. Discursive or direct method noticed by direct mentioning of John’s high standing characteristic and Jennie’s enthusiastic characteristic. Dramatic or indirect method noticed by character’s behavior and some dialogue that mostly used to show narrator and john’s characteristics.
Yellow wallpaper has two kinds of setting. Those are physical setting and social setting. Physical setting consists of actual geographical locations, those are ancestral hall in a colonial mansion, an upstairs bedroom, and a garden; time setting, those are daylight and moonlight (midnight); weather, those are foggy and rain; season, that is mentioned as summer; environment, that is quite for no one disturbed her when she was trying to figure out her fancy about the wallpaper. The feminism of women in that era is as the social setting in the story. The story told about how women in that era fought for their right to get the freedom in doing many things they wanted including not to be imprisoned in such a dim house.
The readers of Yellow wallpaper do not need to make their own solution; it means this story has a closed plot. The ending has been told clearly. It is begun from the exposition that contains an introduction of the place where the colonial mansion had an ancestral hall, an upstairs nursery room, a delicious garden, also the condition or appearance of the wallpaper in the nursery room; character’s characteristics and their occupation; the mental condition of the narrator. Rising action is when the narrator had conflict with herself since being anxious all the time was very hard for her. She also had conflict with her husband. She never wanted to be jailed in her room even though she was sick but her husband did not realized it; what he knew just to give all the best for her recuperation. Narrator also had conflict with the environment around her. She always had high fancy about many things appeared on the wallpaper even the Yellow or spots of it. Climax of the story is when narrator had discovered something from the wallpaper. She enjoyed with her own imagination and was not sure that everybody around her even her husband would believe in her thought about the wallpaper. Falling action is when she got a certainty of her fancy that there were women behind the wallpaper after the shake of the wallpaper; besides that was almost her last day in that puzzling place. Ending of the story is when she realized everything of the wallpaper that the women behind it were just like her. She peeled off all paper setting the women free from the wall then feel free creeping around the floor with locked door of the room. Knowing that, her husband fainted. He realized what he had done fully jailed his wife.
The high standing husband in the story symbolizes the old rule of women’s right in that era which restricts women movements and really contradicts the basic of feminism. Yellow wallpaper here as a boundary or jail for women that avoids them to become one of world outside the jail as they desire. It also symbolizes the women’s role as boring feminine creature. The delicious garden outside the room symbolizes how beautiful and meaningful life they will get outside (free decision that is good for them) rather than being jailed with their own fancy. That is why this story seems teach us about similarity between man and woman, trusty one another, and a justice.

Embarrassing Experience

Holiday is when we have not any lessons in the school for particular time because of certain condition. Usually we get the holiday after final examination or religious events, for instance, Idul fitri. Almost people said that holiday is about how we get new experience. Sometimes it can be good, interesting, amazing  and enjoyfull experience. But some people have bad, annoying, worrying and embarrasing experience. I have unforgettable experience when five years ago I got my first trip to my hometown alone.
Balikpapan is my hometown but I have been getting education in Java island. I got my first trip to Balikpapan when I was in first grade of Senior High School. I went home once a year on Ramadhan holiday. I bought a first flight ticket three days before departure date. The flight was about 06.00 a.m. At the departure date, I arrived in Juanda Airport at 05.00 a.m. I came in Airport and checked point directly. All process of checked point should be done until 05.15 a.m. An official asked me to show my ID card. I opened my pocket to find my ID card, but I got nothing. I was very panic at that time because I lost my ID card that would be used in registration. The official asked me to notify this uncompleteness registration to the Chief of Airport. Without hearing the official’s direction about the location of the Chief’s room, I ran and ran immediately in crowd of Airport. Then I realized something when I was looking out my watch. Oh shit! It was 05.15 a.m. I had to discharge that registration in a very short period of time, in the fact that I must be in a waiting room at 05.30 a.m. It was very difficult in finding out the room in crowd of Airport without the direction. That really got on my nerve! I could not think or see clearly bacause of my dizziness. Suddenly when I thought I will give up, one of the official came to me and showed the way to the Chief’s room. Fifteen minutes later I found the room. I came in directly to see the Chief. Then I told the problem to him, but he did not say anything. Then I asked him “Excuse me sir, are you ok? Could you decide something now because it is 05.30 a.m. and I have the first flight”. He kept silence for awhile then said “You will be left by the aircraft if you do not recheck your wallet”. Then I opened my wallet again and God! I got my ID card in the little pocket. I forgot that I saved it there. I said sorry and thanked to him.
That was the most embarrassing and unforgettable experience in my holiday when I went away alone to my hometown with my carelessness in preparation. I realize that we have to be careful in anything to avoid such kind of embarrassing trip in holiday.

First Year in University

Being a new student of university  is very fantastic thing. A New school means new friends, places, uniforms, condition, subjects, experiences and also problems. People should know the new place where they are standing on. They try to assimilate into all new things in a new place by introduction. The introduction sometimes is very unique, interesting and impressive. I think I have an impressive introduction in my first year in Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University.
I began my study in university by entering a boarding school. In the first year of university, all new students had to stay in a boarding school that we called dormitory. I entered the dormitory on Ramadhan (an Islamic rule when Muslims have to fast for a month) 2010. I remember looking for my room alone in a very big and quiet building. I carried my big suitcase by myself from first floor to third floor of faza dormitory and walked along the path to find my room. In the end of path, I stopped my step. I checked my bag then immediately realized that I did not bring my room number with me. I totally gave up because neither clue nor people I knew were there. I was confused whether I had to go back to the first floor or just stayed there. Finally, I decided to sit on the floor and waited for a miracle that could show me the room. About ten minutes later, there was a tall masculine girl with a bigger suitcase than mine in her left hand seemed to come to me. She passed me and stood in front of a room next to me. I watched her when she was unlocking the door; until then, I realized a card with my photo in her right hand. I stopped her to ask about the card “I am sorry, I feel I know the card that you are carrying. Where did you find it anyway?” She looked at me then the card “Oh I found it on the first floor and I brought it because I looked the owner is my roommate. I think someone has fallen it down and, wait! It seems the girl in the photo is you right? Hey, nice to see you. My name is Betty.” We shook hand then came in the room to wait for the other roommates. After we were complete, we had a gathering to know each other. We talked much, had some jokes, laughed, smiled, took photos, made a rule for all members of room and prayed together. While we were sitting, Betty immediately stood and said “Ok if everybody is here let’s get the ball rolling. We have to tidy up our room right?” Even though we were tired and getting hungry, we did it together happily.  We all have been being best friends for two years and ever after.
My first year in University is very impressive. Finding out my room alone in a big dormitory without any clue then meeting the friendliest roommates in the world is really unforgettable for me. I think we need this kind of introduction to meet many good people and make big relationship.
