Phonology is
one of my favorite subject that is very interesting. The course shows us how to
produce speech sounds in English. In the class we learn more about speech
mechanism and production of sounds. It shows how native speaker’s organs of
speech work to produce the speech sound. This really helps us as English
learners to speak English appropriately and correctly like a native speaker.
Everyone in the world, in the normal biologist condition, actually be able to
speak English correctly. Humans who are formed in same organs can do that, but
we just move the organs in the different way. When we learn how native speakers
move their organs of speech, we automatically can produce the same sounds
correctly.
My lecturer of
phonology has not only interesting but also imaginative way in teaching. In
every meeting, there is a group that has to present a topic from a handout. We
have a discussion by questioning and answering. It continues until no one can
give an appropriate explanation. Then the lecturer explains more the topic by
picture of human’s organs of speech. In explaining, the lecturer always makes
some jokes and has philosophical messages. Either the students or the lecturer
are enjoyed the class because of that kind of learning method.
Phonology is
very important in understanding the way native speakers produce speech sounds. We
learn how the air comes in the lung and out through larynx or pharynx, then
passes our vocal cords. It will through mouth or nose to produce any kinds of
vocal or consonant. It makes us realize that “impossible is nothing”. Always
there is a way if there is a will. Being serious in learn phonology, it is
possible for us to be best English speakers.
